We're going pescetarian! For a little while at least!
So, we've come to the conclusion (no offense) that the meat industry in America is effed.
Excuse the language, but I feel like there is no other way to put it.
For so long, we've known the problem was around, but we never really did much about it. Until a random car conversation we had the other day when we decided, yep, we're doing it, we're eliminating red meat, chicken and other meat from our diets (as best as we can).
I have watched far too many documentaries recently about the farm factory industry in the States, and I just can't support it.
I feel like since moving here, although we maintain our healthy lifestyle, we've just come across way more health problems than we ever did at home.
We haven't really changed the way we eat, we still exercise a lot, but we just don't feel healthy. So we're trying to see what happens when we cut meat out of our diet for a while.
Over the past year, we have definitely cut back on our meat intake, especially since moving to America, but I reckon we can still do better.
So why this is why we're going pescetarian.
- I feel like I just cannot support factory farmed meat, and have struggled to find good quality meats over here. Yes Portland has some amazing local meat suppliers, but it is so expensive.
- We are going to see if it makes a difference to our weight (hopefully loss)
- We are still going to eat sustainably sourced fish that we know where it's sourced from.
- I just don't feel so enthusiastic about red meat anymore.
- We want to build our portfolio of vegetarian and fish dishes
- We feel like it's the more environmentally ethical choice
- I feel extremely sad for all the animals like cows, chickens and pigs that lead absolutely no life what so ever which zero quality of living.
- We just want to see what happens!
I know this could be a big step, but I already feel like it can't be too hard!
Some challenges I think we'll come across transitioning to a hopeful pescetarian lifestyle
- Going out for dinner and to friends houses is going to be a challenge and having to restrict ourselves.
- Bacon. I love bacon.
- Being deficient in iron and protein.
Not sure what else to add here. I think I've got an overly positive mind about this experiment!
So what's on our menu this week then?
I think we're doing ourselves a favour by keeping fish and seafood in our diet, so I'm actually really excited about this challenge!
Sunday - was salmon, with a pear, rocket and walnut salad
Monday - more salmon/fish with garlic sautéed greens
Tuesday - our beautiful Indian lentil dhal
Wednesday - another version of our Mexican loaded sweet potatoes
Thursday - chickpea falafel with flatbread and salad
Friday - homemade fish tacos with corn tortillas made from scratch.
Doesn't sound too bad right?
For lunches, we've gone with a sweet potato quinoa pattie and a buckwheat, beetroot salad!
Ps - also SO excited to share a tonne of new recipes with you!
I am really excited to try this, and it's been something I've wanted to do for a long time, but never really got around to doing it!
So during the next couple of weeks, we are using Healthy Pears to make us ACCOUNTABLE! We will be posting regular updates, as well as any new recipes we have discovered in this process!
So let us know!
