Spicy, warming, comforting and flavourful, German mulled wine will always be a Winter favourite of ours! Spiced with aromas of orange, clove, cinnamon and cardamom, this is a beautiful and easy recipe to make that your friends will love!
I love German mulled wine! I love wine, I love any sort of wine recipe in fact! But there's something about mulled wine that just transports me to another place.
Fun fact, I've actually had this post in my drafts since LAST CHRISTMAS!!!!! I have been so excited to share this with you, but alas time did not permit last Christmas when we went back to Australia for the crazy season!
Back when I was 15 I did an exchange through school to Germany. It was over the Christmas period so naturally, we got to experience the wonders that is a German Christmas. One thing I will never forget was walking around the Christmas markets in Munich. It was snowy, cold and the air was full of amazing aromas of wine, spices, and pretzels.
Fast forward a couple of years when I was back in Germany again at the age of 17 (woohoo to the legal drinking age of 16), where I wasn't on a school trip, and could now, being the legal drinking age, experience what I thought was the true spirit of Germany and Christmas- German mulled wine.
This recipe will always take me back to that time in the German markets. There is just something so special about a winter Christmas when it's cold outside, snowy, or rainy and all you want to do is curl up with a good book and a glass of red, or in that case, wander around the markets in the afternoon sipping on mulled wine out of a mug.
There is something about German mulled wine or any hot spiced and alcoholic drink that just sets the mood for a Winter Christmas. Don't get me wrong, I love Christmas in Australia when you've swapped your mulled wine for sparkling or white wine, your ugg boots for flip-flops and your cozy sweaters with summery dresses, but there is just so much to love about Christmas in the snow.
In 2015, we had our first American and white Christmas. We sat around the fire on Christmas Eve, sipping on mulled wine and spiced apple cider with the Christmas lights on, the cozy ugly Christmas sweaters, and the snow falling. It was absolute bliss!
So in recognition of us spending yet another year in America, and our second American Christmas (hopefully a white one) we thought we'd share one of our favourite holiday drinks.
German Mulled Wine Recipe Notes
This mulled wine recipe is so easy to make. You literally just chuck in the wine, and spiced, leave it for a little while to stew, slowly warm it up then bang in a bit of sugar to sweeten it up (yes, very technical!). We made ours in our dutch oven over the stove top, and let it sit in there, cooled stewing in the spices for about half a day.
Perfection!
We could not recommend this recipe enough, if you are wanting to embrace a little European this Winter, seriously make mulled wine you won't regret it! We'd love to see your holiday recipe snaps! I always think I want to live in Australia - and I'm sure I would LOVE it - but you're right, there is something about a cold, cozy Christmas. I'm missing the fun alcoholic drinks this season!! My husband was making a few cocktails this Christmas and it's just not the same when you're drinking gingerale, hah. This mulled wine looks amazing! Happy Christmas Georgie!
